KUALA LUMPUR: Budget 2026 fails to deliver bold structural reforms needed to strengthen Malaysia’s economy, said Bachok MP Syahir Sulaiman. He questioned whether the measures announced were genuine economic strategies or politically motivated giveaways ahead of a possible early general election. Syahir criticised the budget’s focus on projects and allocations in Sabah and Sarawak, suggesting it was linked to upcoming state polls, while opposition-led states were overlooked.

Although he acknowledged increased cash aid under STR and Sara, he said these short-term measures do not address wage imbalance, rising living costs, or weak job creation. Syahir warned that fiscal restraint without strategic investment could hinder long-term growth and productivity under the 13th Malaysia Plan.
