Former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has cautioned Sabah voters to prioritise good governance over personality and ethnic loyalties in the coming state election. Speaking on Sinar Daily’s Top News Podcast, he said Sabah’s politics remain fragmented, with voters often choosing leaders based on identity rather than integrity or performance.

“They should be choosing a good government, but most of the time they don’t look at good governance,” he said. Mahathir noted that frequent party formations and multi-cornered contests split the electorate, weakening political stability. He added that voters can only truly judge a leader’s integrity after they gain power, as “power can corrupt.”
