KUALA LUMPUR — Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) has criticised Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh for defending Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution amid a growing citizenship scandal involving seven Harimau Malaya players. LFL director Zaid Malek called Yeoh “tone-deaf” for praising Saifuddin’s “compassion and efficiency” despite FIFA confirming that forged documents were used to naturalise the players.

He said the government’s actions contradicted its claims of fairness, adding that thousands of Malaysians remain stateless while undeserving cases were expedited. Zaid urged the government to prioritise genuine citizenship cases and uphold court rulings protecting stateless individuals. The controversy has become one of the biggest tests for the Anwar administration.
