KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 11 — Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has defended herself after a 2022 social media post criticising naturalised footballers resurfaced online. Yeoh said the remarks were made under different circumstances, stressing that Malaysia’s citizenship policies have evolved under the Madani government.

Naturalisation chaos

“Some people pulled out an old post from 2022 to suggest inconsistency, but facts are very different today,” she said. Her earlier post had criticised the naturalisation of Lee Tuck, an English-born midfielder who later gained Malaysian citizenship.

Yeoh praised Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail for clearing 49,000 pending citizenship applications and enabling Malaysian mothers to pass citizenship to children born overseas.
