WASHINGTON — Thousands of US farmers face mounting pressure as the government shutdown and ongoing trade tariffs compound economic strain on the agriculture sector.
With Congress deadlocked over funding, the USDA’s Farm Service Agency has furloughed two-thirds of its staff, suspending loans, aid, and disaster programs.
Farmers blown
Experts say the timing is disastrous, coming amid a trade war that has already crippled exports to China. Professor Paul Mitchell of the University of Wisconsin-Madison said China’s boycott of US soybeans, which make up half the nation’s crop revenue, has severely hurt farmers.
Trump has acknowledged the problem and suggested a potential bailout using tariff revenues, but relief remains uncertain.
