KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 — Malaysia could be heading toward an early general election, according to CGS International, which noted that Budget 2026’s populist tone and absence of major policy risks may pave the way for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to call for polls ahead of schedule.
In an economic note released on Friday, the research house said the government’s decision to maintain popular measures — including the RM100 cash aid for the public — and the lack of controversial reforms suggest a politically calculated approach.
Early General Election
“The 16th General Election is not due until February 2028, but PM Anwar could capitalise on the ‘feel-good’ budget, his rising popularity, and a disunited opposition to bid for an early second term,” CGS International wrote.
The firm added that if this scenario materialises, national polls could even precede the next round of state elections, marking a strategic move to consolidate federal power while public sentiment remains favourable.
