LONDON — Europe’s wild bees and butterflies are facing a worsening extinction crisis, according to the latest International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Nearly 100 additional bee species are now classified as at risk, bringing the total to 172 out of 1,928 assessed — one in ten.

The IUCN also reported that 65 of 442 butterfly species are threatened, a sharp rise since 2010. Habitat loss due to intensive agriculture, pollution, and rising temperatures are driving the collapse. The Madeiran large white butterfly has already gone extinct.
Conservationists warn that the decline of these vital pollinators poses a serious threat to Europe’s ecosystems and food production, urging urgent intervention.
