WASHINGTON, Oct 16 — U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed he authorised the CIA to conduct covert operations in Venezuela, citing drug trafficking and security threats. Speaking at the White House, Trump said the move aims to curb narcotics smuggling and punish the Maduro regime, which Washington does not recognise as Venezuela’s legitimate government.

The announcement follows at least five U.S. strikes on suspected drug boats in the Caribbean that killed 27 people, described by UN experts as “extrajudicial executions.” Trump declined to say if the authorisation included plans to remove President Nicolás Maduro, calling the question “ridiculous.”
