KUALA TERENGGANU, Oct 15 — The viral “Roti Israil” has stirred confusion online, with some mistaking its name as linked to Israel. However, the bakery’s third-generation owner, Muhammad Farouq Mohd Rafi, clarified that the name originates from his late grandfather, Israil Tafzul Hussain, a respected baker in Kuala Terengganu since 1950.

Farouq said the family has used the name for over seven decades, long before recent sensitivities over Israel arose. “People misunderstood, but once we explained that it was my grandfather’s name, not a country, they accepted it,” he told Sinar Harian. The bakery continues to produce preservative-free traditional bread, maintaining its original recipe and loyal customers despite rising costs. Photo: Sinar
