Helmie Shahrezza Shahrom, 34, has been sentenced to 28 years and three months in jail and 18 strokes of the cane for masterminding a cross-border drug smuggling operation using a drone during Singapore’s Covid-19 lockdown.

Singaporean Jailed for 28 Years

Found guilty of importing over 180g of methamphetamine and consuming the drug, Helmie directed a team that flew narcotics from Malaysia to Kranji Park two to three times a week.

His three accomplices received lighter sentences after pleading guilty. Helmie, who was out on bail for earlier drug cases, claimed he didn’t know the drone carried drugs. The judge dismissed this and imposed a harsher sentence.
