KUALA LUMPUR — Former senator Syed Ali Alhabshee said UMNO has a strong chance to rebuild its reputation ahead of the 16th General Election as fragmented Malay parties weaken. He said calls for Malay unity often fade after elections, citing divisions since pre-independence and the formation of PAS after the fall of the Malayan Union.

Syed Ali urged UMNO to rise again but not with the same tainted leadership, stressing that discredited leaders should step aside. He said restoring Malay confidence requires genuine reform and strengthening UMNO’s grassroots foundation.
