A Tesla Model Y driver sustained serious burns after his vehicle crashed and burst into flames on the Pacific Highway near Rainbow Flat on Friday afternoon. Emergency services closed the highway around 2.30pm as firefighters battled a “thermal runaway” battery fire.

Paramedics treated the man, believed to be in his 40s, for burns to his face, hands and arms before transporting him to Manning Base Hospital in Taree. Police are investigating the cause of the crash, while fire crews worked to safely extinguish the electric vehicle blaze and prevent further ignition.
