DHAKA: Bangladesh’s garment industry faces losses exceeding $1 billion after a fire gutted the cargo complex at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport over the weekend. The blaze, which raged for 27 hours, destroyed imported raw materials, export-ready apparel, and product samples at one of the nation’s busiest logistics hubs.

Authorities deployed 37 firefighting units, supported by the army, navy, and air force, to control the flames. The airport handles more than 600 metric tons of dry cargo daily, with volumes doubling during peak season. Industry leaders said up to 250 factories rely on the facility for exports. The incident follows two other deadly factory fires last week, raising alarm over safety standards in Bangladesh’s industrial sector.
