Swiss NGO Bruno Manser Fonds (BMF) has accused Malaysian-linked companies of driving large-scale deforestation in Papua New Guinea, turning the country into the world’s top tropical timber exporter.

94% Logging Licenses linked to Malaysian Companies

BMF claims 94% of Forest Clearance Authority (FCA) licences are controlled by Malaysian firms, threatening 1.6 million hectares of untouched rainforest. Despite a 2023 moratorium on new FCA licences, logging continues. BMF is urging Prime Minister James Marape to cancel FCA permits, respect indigenous land rights, and establish a public timber registry.

A viral video shared by BMF shows alleged logging damage and local activists decrying exploitation and environmental destruction.
