KUALA LUMPUR: A corroded sewer pipe and unstable soil were the main causes of the 2024 Jalan Masjid India sinkhole, which swallowed an Indian tourist, said Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa. She told Parliament that geological studies ruled out limestone as a factor, as the affected area lies on schist rock.

The incident occurred on Aug 23, 2024, when Ms Vijayalaksmi, 48, fell into an 8m-deep hole. The Cabinet received the full report in August 2025. DBKL is now conducting geotechnical studies across Kuala Lumpur, with no high-risk zones identified so far.
