Since the pandemic, unruly airline passenger incidents have surged, with nearly 6,000 reports in 2021 — five times the previous year, according to the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Although cases have declined by more than 80% since that peak, disruptive behavior remains a persistent issue. As of September 2025, 1,205 incidents were reported, already surpassing 2020’s total.

The International Civil Aviation Organization classifies unruly passengers into four levels — from verbal abuse to life-threatening or cockpit breach attempts. Recent cases include assaults on flight attendants and attempts to storm cockpits. Airlines continue to face flight delays, diversions, and heightened security challenges.
Authorities urge stricter penalties and better prevention measures to curb such behavior, which threatens passenger safety and flight operations. The FAA maintains that while progress is visible, “there remains more work to do.”
