TOKYO: The trial of Tetsuya Yamagami, accused of assassinating former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in July 2022, begins Tuesday, three years after Japan’s most shocking political killing in decades. Yamagami, 45, allegedly shot Abe with a homemade gun during a campaign speech in Nara.

He blamed Abe for ties to the Unification Church, which he said ruined his family after his mother donated about ¥100 million. The case exposed widespread links between the church and Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party. Seventeen hearings are scheduled before the verdict on Jan 21. The trial coincides with a Trump–Takaichi summit in Tokyo.
