RIO DE JANEIRO — At least 64 people died as Rio de Janeiro police carried out the state’s largest-ever anti-gang raids. Around 2,500 heavily armed officers, supported by helicopters, drones, and armoured vehicles, targeted the Comando Vermelho gang in the Complexo da Penha and Complexo do Alemao favelas.
Anti-Gang Raids
Governor Claudio Castro declared the city “at war,” saying the raids aimed to stop the gang’s territorial expansion. Authorities confirmed 60 suspected traffickers and four police officers were among the dead. Residents were forced to flee as gunfire and fires spread through the densely populated neighbourhoods.
