Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz admitted that Malaysia was under pressure in the negotiations with Donald Trump’s government though he defended the new trade agreement, dismissing claims that the country is “selling out” to foreign interests.
Speaking in Kuala Lumpur, Zafrul said Malaysia remains a sovereign nation that “obeys no power” and will always defend its people’s interests.
Malaysia vs USA
Malaysia signed a RM1 trillion deal with the US, and Zafrul says, “So, whether we like it or not, we need to defend our access to the US markets, even when under pressure.”
He acknowledged that negotiations were conducted under difficult circumstances but described the outcome as the “best case scenario.” Opposition lawmakers and some PRO-PH MPs had earlier alleged the deal would compromise national independence. Zafrul insisted the deal was necessary to safeguard market access.
