Sin Chew Daily columnist Kuik Cheng Kang has cautioned Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim against falling into PAS’ “religious trap.” Kuik said Malaysia’s fixation on alcohol controversies plays into PAS’ agenda to consolidate power ahead of the next general election.

“The mastermind behind the creation of such issues is no other than the party overflowing with confidence to recapture Putrajaya,” he wrote. Kuik warned that Anwar’s bid to woo conservative voters could “drain Pakatan’s solid Chinese support base” and strain racial trust. Praising Anwar’s ASEAN diplomacy, Kuik said the real test lies in Malaysia, urging him “to guide society back to progressiveness and not allow radicals to ruin this blessed land.”
