Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying announced that the government is exploring ways to prevent misuse of subsidies for essential goods like rice, sugar, and cooking oil. Speaking in Parliament, she said the subsidy rationalisation drive will expand beyond energy and be implemented gradually.
Targeted Subsidies for Rice Sugar and Oil
The goal is to ensure subsidies reach only those who truly need them, following the targeted approach used for RON95 and diesel. Malaysia has spent billions annually on subsidies, often at the cost of development programmes. Under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the government is committed to easing fiscal pressure while protecting vulnerable groups through targeted aid.
