Experts Warn U.S.-India Trust May Take Years to Rebuild

Tensions between the U.S. and India have deepened amid rising tariffs, visa fees, and diplomatic friction, even as Washington warms ties with China. Experts say the strategic trust built over two decades is eroding, with India now facing higher tariffs than Beijing.

President Trump’s remarks on brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, and threats of 250% tariffs, have further strained relations. Despite signing a 10-year defense framework, analysts warn that a transactional U.S. approach could push India closer to Russia and China. 

The lack of leader-level chemistry and uncertainty around trade policy leave New Delhi navigating a complex geopolitical landscape.
