Romans Learned Shipbuilding from Malays Claim Sparks Backlash

KUALA LUMPUR: Controversy erupted after Prof Dr Solehah Yaacob of International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) claimed that the ancient Romans learned shipbuilding from the Malays. The statement, made in a recent lecture, was widely mocked online, with human rights activist Siti Kasim quipping that the academic “could become a fiction writer.”

A Facebook page, SEA Heritage & History, rebutted the claim, saying no credible archaeological or historical evidence supports the idea. It noted that while Rome and Southeast Asia had trade links via India and the Indian Ocean, there is no proof of direct technological exchange. The page concluded the theory remains an unverified hypothesis lacking scholarly validation.
