KOTA KINABALU — A schoolmate told the coroner’s court that Zara Qairina Mahathir had shared troubling details about her family and appeared increasingly withdrawn days before she was found unconscious on July 16. The Form 1 student said Zara had spoken about past family difficulties and appeared stressed but had not shown fear while at school.

She recounted that Zara was accused of stealing a wallet the night before the incident and was later seen crying. Later that night, Zara went to the dormitory’s third-floor toilet and was later discovered to have fallen and suffered severe injuries.
