Malaysian-Born Professor Appointed UK’s First Chief Medical and Scientific Officer

Malaysian-born academic Prof Jacob George has been appointed the United Kingdom’s first Chief Medical and Scientific Officer for the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). Born in Kuala Lumpur and raised in Meru, Klang, George is a cardiovascular medicine expert qualified in Clinical Pharmacology and General Internal Medicine.

He joins the MHRA on Jan 5, 2026, working in London and Hertfordshire while based in Scotland. Reflecting on his Malaysian roots, George credited his upbringing and teachers in Selangor for shaping his career. His appointment marks a milestone for Malaysian representation in the UK’s public health leadership.
