BINTULU – A dinner gathering turned tragic when two men, aged 31 and 58, died after eating poisonous rattan shoots in Sungai Salik Mayeng, Tatau, on Sunday night. District Police Chief DSP Jame Reis said four others who also consumed the dish suffered food poisoning symptoms, including severe stomach pain and vomiting.

Villagers rushed the group to the Tatau Health Clinic, but two were pronounced dead. The rattan shoots, identified as Calamus castaneus, were collected from a nearby farm. Police confirmed no signs of foul play, and post-mortem examinations are being conducted at Bintulu Hospital.
