Malaysian mothers married to foreign men will soon be able to automatically secure citizenship for their children born abroad, with implementation expected by mid-2026. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said preparations are underway, including new registration forms, system updates, and guidance for Malaysian embassies worldwide.
Citizenships for Children of M’sian Mothers Abroad
The Attorney General’s Chambers is finalizing amendments to the Nationality Regulations 1964 and Births and Deaths Registration Act 1957, following Parliament’s historic approval of the Constitution Amendment Bill 2024. The reform ensures equality for mothers, previously denied this right, and supports efforts to clear a backlog of over 50,000 citizenship applications.
