Thailand’s brief attempt at an afternoon booze blackout has ended with a sheepish U-turn. After enforcing stricter alcohol rules that left tourists confused and locals cranky, authorities have now restored 2pm–5pm drink sales under a six-month pilot.

The reversal came after a marathon three-hour meeting, which likely featured more sighs than celebrations. Tourism operators had warned that visitors did not fly across oceans to sip lukewarm water at 3pm. With the holiday season looming and arrivals slowing, the government decided a cheerful tourist is apparently one holding a cold drink. Thailand now hopes revived afternoons will revive spending too.
