Upko secretary-general Nelson Angang has challenged MCA’s political independence within Barisan Nasional after MCA’s Dr Pamela Yong criticised Upko’s withdrawal from Pakatan Harapan and the federal Cabinet. Nelson said it was unfair for MCA to label Upko’s move “theatrical” when the party had not strongly defended Sabah’s rights or its constitutional revenue share.

Nelson also questioned MCA’s contributions to Sabah’s interests, while Putrajaya’s decision to appeal parts of the High Court ruling on revenue entitlement continues to widen tensions.
