Britons Leave in Record Numbers as Post-Election Pressures Mount, Daily Mail claims
New estimates show 257,000 Britons emigrated last year, far above earlier figures. Net emigration reached 116,000 in the year to September 2024. Revised data highlights a clear pattern: more UK citizens are choosing to live abroad.
Britons moving abroad
Several pressures are driving the trend. Higher living costs, increased tax burdens, and slower wage growth have pushed professionals to seek better financial conditions elsewhere. Post-Brexit mobility limits have also encouraged some to relocate sooner, while global cities such as Dubai and Milan continue to attract skilled workers with lower taxes and stronger job markets. Updated ONS modelling also shows falling EU migration and shifting non-EU inflows.
