FIFA revealed that several suspended “heritage” footballers received Malaysian passports on the same day they applied, raising questions about the naturalisation process.

According to MalaysiaKini, applications by Rodrigo Julian Holgado, Imanol Javier Machuca, Joao Vitor Brandao Figueiredo, Jon Irazabal Iraurgui, Hector Alejandro Hevel Serrano, Gabriel Felipe Arrocha, and Facundo Tomas Garces Rattaro were approved almost immediately in March and June 2025.

FIFA noted the players submitted two separate applications, but none contained proof of ancestry. Investigations also found the players could not speak Malay, contradicting FAM’s claim they passed language tests. The Home Minister defended the approvals, citing discretion over residency requirements.
