BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says any Barisan Nasional assemblyman who defects after the 17th Sabah state election will face a RM50 million penalty or legal action. He said all BN candidates have signed undertakings agreeing to the penalty to prevent a repeat of past instability.

Speaking in Kinabatangan, Zahid said the anti-hopping law reduces the risk, but BN wants to reinforce discipline. He urged BN’s 45 candidates to work hard to regain dominance in Sabah, adding that voters want BN and UMNO to return. Sabah passed its anti-hopping amendments in May 2023.
