Bangladesh has formally requested India to extradite ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who was sentenced to death last week for crimes against humanity linked to a deadly crackdown on student-led protests.

Hasina, 78, has been in hiding in India since her government was toppled in August 2024. Dhaka’s foreign ministry said India has an “obligatory responsibility” under a bilateral treaty to facilitate her return, though New Delhi has only “noted” the verdict without commenting on the request.
This marks Bangladesh’s third extradition appeal. The case comes amid political turmoil ahead of February 2026 elections, with UN reports citing 1,400 deaths during Hasina’s final months in power.
