Malaysia plans to ban individuals under 16 from opening social media accounts starting next year, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced. The Cabinet decision aims to curb cybercrime and protect children from online predators. 

Malaysia to Ban Social Media for Underaged Individuals 

The government is studying enforcement models similar to Australia’s, including requiring platforms to adopt eKYC verification using MyKad, passports, or MyDigital ID.

Fahmi stressed that effective implementation will require cooperation from regulators, platforms, and parents. He added that the goal is to make Malaysia’s internet not only fast and affordable but also safe for families. Platforms are expected to comply with the new rules by 2026.
