Malaysia faces a silent threat from illegal plastic waste imports that contaminate soil, rivers, and potentially cause chronic diseases such as cancer. Toxicologist Prof Dr Mustafa Ali Mohd warned that burning these plastics releases harmful chemicals like dioxins and furans, while toxins seep into water supplies and food chains.
Malaysia’s Illegal Plastic Waste Problem
Microplastics from degraded waste enter seafood and drinking water, leading to long-term health risks including inflammation, metabolic disorders, and cognitive issues in children. Customs data shows Malaysia remains a dumping ground, with 35 tons seized in Klang last year. Experts urge stricter bans, while SIRIM now oversees import approvals to safeguard public health.
