Light rain across Sabah this morning did little to deter voters determined to shape the state’s political future, with long queues forming before polling stations opened at 7:30 am in the hotly contested 17th state election.
Polling for the 17th Sabah State Election has officially begun following 14 days of campaigning. Voting is being held at 882 polling centres with 3,559 streams, giving 1.74 million registered voters the chance to choose a new state government. Polling centres opened at 7:30 am and will close in stages from 12 noon, with all centres shutting by 5:30 pm.
A total of 596 candidates from 22 political parties, along with 73 Independents, are contesting 73 state seats. The most contested seats include Tulid (14 candidates), Bandau, Tamparuli, and Inanam (13 candidates each), and Banggi (12 candidates).
Light rain over Sabah
Voters are advised to cast their ballots early due to forecasted rain and thunderstorms. The Election Commission expects turnout to exceed 60 percent, weather permitting, compared with 66.61 percent in the 2020 election. Preliminary results are expected around 10 pm, but may be delayed due to weather, with efforts to release them by midnight.
Employers have been reminded to allow employees time off to vote, as today is a public holiday in Sabah. Voters are also reminded that mobile phones are not allowed inside polling stations and should not hand over identity cards to anyone other than authorised election officials.
