Former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli revealed Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim secretly planned in April 2024 to recruit Umno’s Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz into PKR and announce it at the party congress. The scheme involved two by-elections to make Zafrul an MP and Nurul Izzah Anwar a state assemblywoman, paving her way to replace Amirudin Shari as Selangor mentri besar.
Failed Anwar Plan
The plan collapsed after it leaked and Umno fiercely objected. Rafizi said Anwar pushed relentlessly without consulting leadership and grew upset at dissent. Though Zafrul later joined PKR, the shortened timeline now blocks the original succession plot.
