Many Malaysians feel their grocery bills are rising even though official inflation remains low. Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) explains that inflation, measured at 1.3% in October 2025, only tracks average price changes, while the cost of living reflects how much income is needed to sustain daily life. 

Cost of Living Pressure Hitting Families

When wages fail to keep pace with accumulated price increases, purchasing power declines, especially for B40 and M40 households. Psychological biases also distort perceptions: frequent purchases like food feel costlier, and price hikes are remembered more vividly. To ease pressures, BNM advocates managing prices, targeted aid such as SARA and STR, and long-term wage reforms.
