TOKYO: A 7.6-magnitude earthquake jolted northeastern Japan late Dec 8, triggering tsunami warnings for Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate prefectures. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported waves up to 70cm hitting Aomori’s coast, prompting evacuation orders for 90,000 residents.
Tsunami Warnings
The epicentre was 80km offshore at 54km depth, registering upper 6 intensity in Aomori—strong enough to topple furniture and shatter windows. All warnings were lifted by early Dec 9.
Authorities reported 23 injuries, mostly from falling objects; one serious case at a Hachinohe hotel. NHK noted no major structural damage or fatalities as of evening.
