International airlines are expected to carry a record 5.2 billion passengers in 2026, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), despite ongoing global challenges. The association also revised its 2025 profit forecast upward to US$39.5 billion, crediting stronger‑than‑expected air freight performance. 

Airlines to Hit Record Passenger Numbers in 2026

IATA director general Willie Walsh said the sector continues to face rising costs, supply‑chain bottlenecks, geopolitical tensions and regulatory pressures, but airlines have built resilience that supports stable profitability. 

Profits in 2026 are projected to reach US$41 billion, though aircraft shortages remain a limiting factor. Profitability varies widely by region, with Middle Eastern carriers leading global margins.
