JetBlue Pilot Avoids Midair Collision with US Air Force Tanker Near Curaçao
A JetBlue Airbus A320 en route from Curaçao to New York JFK narrowly avoided a midair collision on Friday with a US Air Force air-to-air refueling tanker. About 20 minutes after takeoff, the pilot reported the military aircraft passing directly ahead within 2-5 miles at 34,000 feet, while the JetBlue plane was climbing through 33,400 feet.

Forced to stop climbing and descend, the pilot called it “outrageous” that the tanker’s transponder was off, rendering it invisible to radar and TCAS systems. Curaçao air traffic control confirmed no sighting. The incident occurs amid intensified US military activity in the Caribbean, including drug interdiction strikes and deployment of the USS Gerald R. Ford carrier group near Venezuela. JetBlue has reported it to authorities.
