Petaling Jaya: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s latest Cabinet reshuffle has strengthened Umno while diminishing DAP’s influence, according to political analysts Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara to FMT. He highlighted DAP’s “downgrade,” with Anthony Loke retaining transport but Steven Sim moved to a smaller portfolio, partly due to demands on UEC recognition. In contrast, Umno gained prominently: Johari Ghani assumed the key investment, trade and industry ministry, and Noraini Ahmad was promoted to full minister.
Bolsters Umno
James Chin of University of Tasmania saw DAP shifts as signalling a tougher stance toward Chinese representatives to appease Malay voters pre-election. Analysts also noted Anwar’s careful balancing of PKR factions post-Rafizi’s party defeat and inclusion of Sabah-Sarawak figures to maintain unity.
