Tesla has rapidly expanded its Bay Area ride‑hailing service, registering 1,655 vehicles and 798 drivers with the California Public Utilities Commission, up from just 28 cars and 128 drivers at launch in August.
Tesla Registers Vehicles for Robotaxi Service
Unlike rivals Waymo and Zoox, Tesla’s Robotaxi is not registered as an autonomous vehicle service, instead operating with Full Self‑Driving and human drivers. Waymo has 1,955 vehicles registered in California, while Zoox has 229.
Users report long wait times since Tesla’s app launched publicly in September, prompting the company to recruit more drivers, even from its factories. In Austin, Tesla is testing driverless vehicles, aiming for 500 cars.
