Massive 50-Vehicle Pile-Up on Icy Japan Expressway Kills One

TOKYO – A catastrophic pile-up involving more than 50 vehicles on the Kan-etsu Expressway in Gunma prefecture claimed one life and injured 26 others on Dec 26. The accident occurred around 7.30pm in Minakami’s outbound lane amid falling snow, with vehicles skidding on ice.

It began when a truck rear-ended a stopped truck, sparking a 300-metre chain reaction. At least 10 vehicles burst into flames, taking over seven hours to extinguish. A 77-year-old Tokyo woman died in the rear seat of a car. Drivers reported losing control despite a 50km/h speed limit.
