KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court on December 26, 2025, sentenced former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, 72, to 15 years in prison and a RM11.38 billion fine after convicting him on four counts of abuse of power and 21 counts of money laundering in the multibillion-ringgit 1MDB scandal. Judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah ruled that Najib abused his positions to receive RM2.28 billion from 1MDB funds into his personal accounts between 2011 and 2014.
Najib jail time
The concurrent sentences will begin after Najib completes his current reduced six-year term in the separate SRC International case, set for release in 2028. Unpaid fines could trigger additional decades in prison, potentially until age 90. The court rejected Najib’s claims of Saudi donations and deception by fugitive financier Jho Low. Najib’s defence plans to appeal.
