Umno’s top leadership is aggressively advocating house arrest for jailed former president Najib Razak, yet party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi firmly rejected a similar request for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in 2016.

House Arrest

As deputy prime minister and home minister under Najib, Zahid stated in Parliament that no law allowed transferring Anwar—who was serving a sodomy sentence—from Sungai Buloh Prison to house arrest. This contradicted Pakatan Harapan’s call, raised by Anwar’s wife Wan Azizah. Critics note the Prisons Act empowers the minister to declare any place a prison, highlighting apparent inconsistency in Umno’s current stance.
