SpaceX to Lower Orbits of 4,400 Starlink Satellites After Near-Miss with Chinese Craft
SpaceX announced plans to lower the orbits of approximately 4,400 Starlink satellites from 550km to around 480km throughout 2026, following a near-collision with Chinese satellites in December. VP of Starlink Engineering Michael Nicholls stated the move will accelerate atmospheric re-entry for defunct satellites and significantly reduce collision risks amid growing orbital congestion.

Elon Musk added that lower orbits will enable higher customer density for the global internet service. The decision addresses rising concerns over space debris, with one recent Starlink satellite explosion and multiple close approaches highlighting uncoordinated risks from other operators. Photo Wiki
