Malaysia is set for major legal and institutional reforms in 2026, including a proposal to impose a fixed two‑term limit on the prime minister’s tenure. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the move aims to strengthen governance and stability.
Two-Term Limit for PM
The Dewan Rakyat sitting on January 19 will be pivotal, with reforms covering the separation of powers between the Attorney General and Public Prosecutor, the introduction of a Freedom of Information law, and the establishment of an Ombudsman. Azalina stressed openness, consultation, and continued refinement to ensure effective implementation.
