Families say the change makes financial planning easier, as year‑end bonuses and savings can be used for school supplies, which typically cost RM200–RM300 per child.

Parents also appreciate the structure and consistency of aligning the school year with the calendar year, easing transitions for young children. 

Teachers note that January starts allow for more systematic lesson planning, proper breaks, and smoother scheduling of activities. Retailers, however, report little change in shopping patterns, with parents still buying supplies close to reopening.
