Over 61,000 Malaysians gave up their citizenship between 2020 and December 17, 2025, with nearly 94% moving to Singapore, according to the National Registration Department. Redditors shared their not so surprised reactions regarding the matter. It is commonly known that salaries in Singapore are significantly higher than they are here. 

Over 57,000 Malaysians Renounced Citizenship for Singapore

Some asked with regards to Malaysians living in Singapore with their Permanent Residencies. The numbers are unclear but there’s over 1 Million Malaysians living in Singapore as of now. Furthermore, it seems that our neighboring country is in need of man power, and for the most part, both Malaysians and Singaporeans can be quite similar culturally. 

Others fear having educated people leaving the country as they claim our economy will be stagnant thereafter. Unfortunately, this problem will have dire consequences if the average salaries in Malaysia aren’t increasing.
